Day 5 - Durango -> Petrified Forrest > Flagstaff

Tuesday - September 10, 2019

We were up and on the road at 7:35 this morning. We knew we would have a full day of driving, visiting the Petrified Forrest & Painted Desert and then on to our condo in Flagstaff. The drive was not bad, just long and sometimes boring. We passed through parts of New Mexico where you could literally see for 20 miles and hardly a house along the way, The distance from Durango to The Petrified Forrest was 230 miles. The travel through the park is 26 miles and then upon exit it was 110 miles to Flagstaff for a total of 366 miles driving plus a couple of miles walking in the National Park. We arrived in Flagstaff at 3:00 PM. After check-in we made a grocery run, and just picked up a rotisserie chicken for dinner; we were both too tired to go out. We did gain an hour when we entered Arizona, but I think this just made us more exhausted! When I finish this post up it will be about 9:00 PM local, and I am headed to bed. (Kay has already gone).

I am posting a few photos of the park, and I will let them speak for themselves. Our tentative schedule for tomorrow is to stay close, perhaps visit the historic district of Flagstaff and maybe Lowell Observatory. We plan to have a full day on Thursday at the Grand Canyon. Our condo is great, a 2BR split level with decks off the living area and the master bedroom. It is in the woods and we have a great view of Elden mountain.

You have to be hardy and innovative to survive in the desert. Note the root of this shrub growing down a crack to reach soil.
